Sussex Development Corporation is one of just 13 companies statewide to join the Virginia BEST Safety program, a distinction that reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting the people who build the Commonwealth. Recognized this past weekend at the Virginia BEST Safety Summit & Summer Conference, hosted by the Associated General Contractors of Virginia (AGCVA), Sussex currently holds Level 1 status and is already setting its sights on Level 2, continuing to raise the bar for safety excellence on every jobsite. The recognition ceremony also marked the celebration of a new agreement between the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI), the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) program, and AGCVA, underscoring a shared commitment across the industry to building safer workplaces throughout the state.
The weekend wasn’t just about celebration; it was also about collaboration and shared learning. We were proud to have our Safety Director, Joe Henricks serve as a panelist for the Saturday Safety Roundtable, “Building a Safety Culture Beyond Compliance,” where industry leaders explored how true safety culture is built through field-level buy-in, open reporting of concerns and near misses, and coaching rather than policing. It was a powerful reminder that safety isn’t a checklist, it’s a shared responsibility, and Sussex Development Corporation is honored to stand among the companies leading that charge across Virginia.
